The Hidden Heritage Museum Inside a Library

On a trip to Cowes, you could almost miss it — the library and the museum. What am I talking about? I discovered a fabulous heritage museum run by the council the other day sited inside Cowes Library

It was a hot day, as I remember and I was doing some research on historic people from the Isle of Wight. I was told about the museum and decided to visit. Inside I found rooms filled with interesting history on the amazing boat-building legacy of Cowes including photos and information about Saunders-Roe who built flying boats, hovercraft, helicopters, and even rockets!

The museum also tells some of the history of sailing and a wonderful character called Uffa Fox, who was born on the Isle of Wight in 1898 and went onto become an accomplished boat builder and designer. There’s a wonderful example of a boat he designed, called Avenger, at the museum so you can really get up close to history.

There’s lot for children to do with dressing-up boxes, props and quizzes so it might help to entertain the children over the holiday.

So, the next time you want a library book, take some time to learn about why Cowes is so famous for its maritime heritage.
