Meet the Maker: Kate Sanger Furniture Designer & Maker

Simple, sustainable and modern. Furniture designer and maker Kate Sanger talks about her approach to creating unique affordable commissioned pieces from her workshop on the Isle of Wight.

Hi Kate, tell us a bit more about what you do.

I've been designing and making furniture for over 20 years having trained in London. I work with clients individually to create furniture which blends perfectly into their home. People come to me for a piece to fits into their daily living, perhaps a table of a certain size or a functional statement piece. My expertise lies in taking their ideas and creating modern high quality furniture from tables to beds.

What inspires you?

Wood has so many beautiful aesthetic properties, such as look and feel, that I aim to make furniture which simply enhances its raw state. I use sustainable temperate hardwoods like oak, ash and beech and only ever reclaimed tropical hardwood such as teak and mahogany. Creating a new piece of furniture through recycling gives a new lease of life to naturally aged wood which has been sitting unloved often for decades. This could be salvaged stairs or unwanted discarded sideboards. To enhance the wood's properties I use a natural oil finish rather than varnish which only sits on top of the wood, or a stain which can end up patchy and artificial.

Do you have a particular style?

Modern and simple style often blending different colour woods!

What's your favourite piece?

The piece I love the most is actually my own dining table! I made it 15 years ago to fit my unusually shaped kitchen. My children were both small so I needed a practical table which would also be strong enough for me to clip on two high chairs. It's still going strong despite all the bashing and use over the years and I only need to oil it every now and again to bring the grain back to life.

Do you have a showroom people can visit?

I have workshop in Freshwater in the West Wight and clients are welcome to meet me there by appointment. As all my furniture is made to order previous work can be seen on my Facebook page Kate Sanger Furniture along with all of my contact details.
