New all-purpose Travel Card on the way
15-04-2010 Red Funnel has announced it is replacing its Gold, Silver and Green Travel Card products with a new all-purpose, multi-route Travel Card.
Full details will be published at the launch in a few weeks time but in response to customer feedback, the new product is designed so customers can manage their accounts online and book via the website or by phone.
Whilst the pricing structure will be slightly different to the current ‘Gold’ and ‘Silver’ schemes, it is contemplated that average prices charged to card holders will be broadly in line with current scheme (plus inflation). Detailed information packs will be sent to all Gold and Silver Vehicle Travel Card holders nearer the time.
Options for Green Travel Card holders (East Cowes/Southampton)
Green Travel Card holders are the first group to be affected by the change and are being offered a range of alternatives depending on their individual travel requirements.
A) Season Tickets for daily commuters
7 day, 30 day, 6 month and 12 month Season Tickets are available for foot passengers who commute daily on the Southampton/East Cowes service. They are priced to be comparable with the cost of Green Travel Card crossings before applying a modest fare increase, the first in two years.
- A 12 month Season Ticket costs £1,420 (£3.11 per crossing based on the holder travelling 228 days a year). This compares favorably with the cost of 456 Green Travel Card crossings at £1,386 and represents a 2.45% increase over 2 years.
- The cost of a 7 day Season Ticket which gives unlimited travel for 7 days is £64 (£6.40 per crossing if only used Mon-Fri). In comparison, the cost of 10 Green Travel Card crossings (5 returns) is £60 and represents a 6.6% increase over 2 years.
B) Saver Ticket Books for ad-hoc travellers
Saver ticket books are valid for 12 months from the date of issue and are fully flexible with no sailing time restrictions. 40 single tickets are available for the Southampton/East Cowes route (only) for £160 (£4.00 per crossing) which is 5% less than the cost of 40 Green Travel Card crossings at £168
C) Travel Cards for infrequent travellers
A new all-purpose Travel Card can be used to purchase standard foot passenger tickets for both Red Funnel’s routes at a discounted rate of 10%. This reduces the cost of a Red Jet Day Return ticket for Island residents to £15.66 (£7.83 per crossing)
Red Funnel has written to all existing Green Travel Card holders with information about the various options available but recognizes like anything new, the transition process will take a little while for customers to explore the best option.
Jonathan Green, Sales & Marketing Director commented “We have introduced a new reservation system over the last 2 years which has given many advantages to customers. The Gold, Silver and Green travel cards are the last elements to be migrated onto the new system which is now taking place. This has resulted in some changes to meet the travel requirements of Green Travel Card holders and we would encourage customers to contact us so we can help them find the best solution”.
