New £7m fleet investment programme

07-10-2003 Red Funnel Ferries are pleased to announce a new £7 million investment in its Southampton to East Cowes route. This investment has been triggered by significant traffic growth during recent years.


Work will commence in late September 2003 and will continue over the next 6 months. Significant steps have been taken to minimise disruption to customers, but Red Funnel would like to apologise to anybody inconvenienced during this period. The main project development phases are as follows:-

  • SEPTEMBER 2003
  • Piling and groundwork for new linkspans’ at Southampton and East Cowes
  • Red Osprey is withdrawn from service and sails to Poland
  • Introduction of temporary Norwegian vessel - Bergen Castle
  • OCTOBER 2003
  • Red Osprey delivered to Remontowa Shipyard in Gdansk, Poland, where the vessel will be extended and refurbished, accommodating an extra 60 vehicles
  • NOVEMBER 2003
  • Construction of the new high level linkspans’ at Southampton and East Cowes
  • DECEMBER 2003
  • Completion of linkspans’ at both terminals
  • Revised Christmas/New Year timetable in operation
  • Red Osprey arrives back in Southampton
  • JANUARY 2004
  • Reintroduction of Red Osprey into service with capacity for 200 vehicles
  • Withdrawal from service and delivery of Red Falcon to Poland
  • A 2 boat shuttle service will operate from 3 January to 12 February 2004
  • FEBRUARY 2004
  • A new 3 boat hourly service will commence from 13 February using Red Osprey, Red Eagle and Bergen Castle
  • MARCH 2004
  • A 3 boat hourly service in operation
  • APRIL 2004
  • Reintroduction of Red Falcon
  • Red Falcon joins Red Eagle and Red Osprey on the 3 boat hourly service and replaces temporary vessel, Bergen Castle
