Walk the Wight Packages & Travel Itineraries published

07-04-2016 Red Funnel is encouraging people in Hampshire to lace up their walking boots in aid of Walk the Wight 2016, taking place on Sunday 15 May. 

Organised by Earl Mountbatten Hospice, the event sees thousands of people from both the mainland and the Island walk between 8 and 26.5 miles across the breadth of the Isle of Wight. This year the charity hopes to beat the incredible £270,458 raised in 2015 and is looking to hit a target of £300,000.

Following a successful launch in 2015,entrants can once again sign up via Red Funnel by purchasing an entry pack and foot passenger package for £32.50. Red Funnel have even helped participants plan their day and how to get to their chosen start point smoothly by compiling itineraries that clearly explain which Red Jet or ferry to catch, as well as details on Southern Vectis bus routes and times.

This great value entry option combines the hospice’s‘Pay 25’ entry pack (£25) with discounted foot passenger travel and includes:
•    £18 donation to the Earl Mountbatten Hospice
•    Walker pack including Walk the Wight t-shirt, walker number and sponsorship form for any extra fundraising (remaining £7 of the entry pack fee goes to the hospice and covers the cost of the pack and delivery)
•    £7.50 Red Funnel foot passenger day return for the Red Jet or vehicle ferry service
•    Free return bus to the start of the walk and return from the finishing point, with clear itinerary and instructions for each route option

This sign-up method removes the pressure of fundraising or a sponsorship pledge and allows an easy and convenient way of entering.

The ‘Pay 25’ entry packs can also be purchased from Red Funnel without foot passenger travel and these can be combined with a 20% discount on Red Funnel vehicle ferry travel for staying visits over the weekend of the walk, offering the chance for walkers and their friends and family to enjoy an overnight Island stay and make a weekend of it.
Walk the Wight packages and ferry travel can be purchased online at redfunnel.co.uk/walkthewight, where entrants can also download the itineraries for each route. Entrants have until Tuesday 3 May to sign up for the walk via Red Funnel.

Around 8,000 people take part annually in the spectacular walk,taking in areas of outstanding natural beauty, from Bembridge to the Needles at Alum Bay. This event is the only time that ramblers are able to walk this exact route across the Island, as landowners open up privately owned land especially for Walk the Wight. The event is known for its camaraderie between those taking part and the volunteers that line the route.

Four different routes are available which allows participants of all abilities to take part, from the causal walker to the blister-hardy trekker. Walkers can choose from:
•    a) the full 26.5 mile walk will take 8-12 hours, starting at Bembridge Airport and finishing at Alumn Bay
•    b) the first half of the main walk is 12.5 miles, will take 4-6 hours andstarts at Bembridge, finishing at Carisbrooke Castle
•    c) thesecond half of the main walk is 14 miles long and will take 4-7 hours, starting at Carisbrooke Castle and finishing at Alumn Bay.
•    d) the flat walk is 8 miles long, starting at Sandown Bay Academy and finishing at Newport.

The annual event is in its 26th year and has raised over £3 million for the Earl Mountbatten Hospice, which provides comprehensive end of life healthcare for the Isle of Wight community. Red Funnel is a long standing supporter of the Earl Mountbatten Hospice and Walk the Wight is not the only event Red Funnel regularly sponsors to aid the hospice’s fundraising efforts, with support for the Isle of Wight Memorial Ploughing Match also once again confirmed for 2016.
