Red Funnel supports 'Fight for the Wight'
04-03-2016 Red Funnel is giving its full support to ‘Fight for the Wight’, a 6 month campaign launched today by the Isle of Wight Council in conjunction with the Isle of Wight County Press to protect vital public services on the Island.
Red Funnel will display the Fight for the Wight logo on screens on board its vessels and display literature at its ferry terminals to encourage customers to support the public petition.
The campaign will lobby the government, calling on ministers to look again at the way the Isle of Wight is funded, in order to save key services such as adult social care, education and economic development.
The Isle of Wight Council fears it will not be able to set a legal budget next year, having already slashed millions of pounds from its budget, at the cost of jobs and services.
The petition asks the government to acknowledge that the Island is a unique case and needs extra help, agree to change the way the Island is funded in recognition of the unique challenges and costs faced as an Island community and to increase the funding made available to the council.
Kevin George, Red Funnel CEO, said: “We will be promoting the campaign to customers crossing the Solent. The ferries are critical to the Island but the Island is critical to the ferries – we want it to be a great place for people to live.
"We feel strongly that the Island must pull together to combat the planned budget cuts and tackle the unique issues faced by an Island community. Unfortunately these cuts will diminish services which many vulnerable people rely upon and restrict the development of the Island. We are pleased to support this campaign to Fight for the Wight in the lead up to Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne's Autumn Statement."
