Red Funnel ships to take part in the International Fleet Review
26-04-2005 Red Funnel's flagship 'Red Eagle' and Red Jet 4 will both take part in the International Fleet Review held in the Solent on 28 June 2005.
Attended by the HM Queen, the review will commemorate the bicentenary of the death of Admiral Lord Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar, carrying on the 600-year-old tradition of Fleet reviews, this time extending into a modern symbol of international maritime friendship and co-operation. Ships will arrive in the Solent from all corners of the globe. Naval ships from some 40 nations will join the Royal Navy, merchant vessels, Tall Ships, and thousands of sailing craft of all shapes and sizes.
The same evening there will be an unforgettable re-enactment of an early 19th century sea battle, in a Son et Lumière on the water off Southsea. Theatrical techniques will be used to create the sights and sounds of a sea battle of the period, with Nelson and Trafalgar at its heart. Pyrotechnics, lights and effects from barges and participating Tall Ships will create the illusion of real action and drama.
The show will culminate in one of the largest and most spectacular fireworks displays to be held in Britain. In time-honoured tradition the end of the evening will climax with the huge gathering of floodlit ships in the Solent, making for a unique and memorable sight.
