Red Funnel joins Thames riverbus partnership
19-08-2005 Red Funnel, the original Isle of Wight ferry operator, has been appointed by Parkview, the developer of Battersea Power Station, to be an Operator Partner for a new, high frequency Riverbus service on the Thames.
Red Funnel is joining forces with Thames Clippers to offer the service. The operation will link the proposed leisure and entertainment attractions at the Power Station with Chelsea Harbour in the west and Canary Wharf in the east.
Red Funnel has been appointed to lend expertise to assist in planning and developing the services, which will result in over 100 new jobs on the Thames, and in the upgrading and extension of several central London piers. The fleet will consist of up to twelve purpose designed catamarans with capacity for up to 150 passengers. The initial pilot service is due to be running before the Power Station opens in 2009.
Tom Docherty, Managing Director Red Funnel, said, “We are delighted to be involved in the Thames Riverbus project, and to be working closely with Parkview and Thames Clippers to provide this new service in London. We are very excited about expanding our portfolio outside the Solent, and look forward to being involved in more new projects over the coming years.”
