Red Funnel announces boom in last minute bookings
23-08-2006 Red Funnel, the original Isle of Wight operator, has reported a significant increase in bookings following last week’s security situation at UK airports.
Red Funnel, which operates both vehicle ferries and high-speed catamaran services between Southampton and East and West Cowes, saw an increase of 23% on short-break ferry-only bookings between 10 – 17 August 2006 compared to the same time last year.
Red Funnel Holidays, the Isle of Wight specialist and tour operator, also experienced an increase in bookings as an outcome of last week’s events and reported a rise of 30% in ferry and accommodation short-break bookings. The majority of Red Funnel Holiday bookings during this period were for last-minute breaks, with over 70% of those bookings taken for short-breaks in August 2006.
Colin Hetherington, Commercial Director for Red Funnel, commented, “Holidaymakers are looking to get away for some late summer relaxation without the uncertainty of the current situation associated with going through UK airports. The Isle of Wight is increasingly emerging as a popular short-break destination and is sited to be one of the sunniest spots in the UK so it stands to reason that it’s in demand at the moment. We have been very busy this summer and have recently reported record passenger numbers during Cowes Week. Last week’s increased security measures have meant further increase in Red Funnel’s last-minute bookings. We are very happy to see an increase in visitors to the Island and there is still availability for people seeking a last minute UK holiday this summer.”
