Red Funnel Nominated for Prestigious Education Award

19-09-2016  Red Funnel has been shortlisted for making an ‘Outstanding Contribution to Learning Outside the Classroom’ in the Council for Learning Outside the Classroom’s (CLOtC) 9th annual Awards. The Awards recognise teams who are committed to ensuring that young people have inspiring experiences outside the classroom.

Red Funnel believes it’s the first ferry company in the UK to develop a significant bank of curriculum linked pre-visit, on-site, and post-visit learning resources. The company worked with Education Destination to develop 190 resources for Key Stages 1-5 and adult learners available in its floating classroom.

Many Key Stage 1-4 subjects are covered, with particular emphasis on geography. In addition, Red Funnel has developed two learning trails: firstly, an Isle of Wight Coastal Trail for students of geography in Key Stages 2 -5, as well as general interest resources for lifelong learners; secondly, an Isle of Wight Arts, Literary and History Trail for Key Stages 2-5 and lifelong learners which explores the history of artists linked to the Isle of Wight, myths and legends, church history, as well as literature, art, architecture, photography, and history.

Kevin George, CEO at Red Funnel, said: “We are delighted to have been shortlisted for this award which recognises the team’s hard work in providing educational resources for young people. We’ve had some superb feedback from schools and education providers which proves that our floating classroom concept is really beneficial.”

Peter Tomlinson from Education Destination said: “This prestigious nomination from the official body confirms the quality and innovative nature of the materials which Red Funnel Ferries can offer young people.”

Red Funnel’s entry is shortlisted in the Innovator category sponsored by the YHA. The public have until 11th November to vote for their favourite and the winners will be announced in Birmingham at the CLOtC Awards dinner on 24th November 2016.
