Precariously clinging to the cliff path above Shanklin sits the Hideaway, a very popular watering hole and restaurant in the summer months. Recently extended and with an extremely pretty garden, there are fabulous views out to sea from inside and from the surprisingly spacious terrace above the lawned garden.

Furniture outside has been recycled from old wooden pallets and is quirky but sturdy, with raised seating areas to take in those spectacular views. A blue painted rowing boat is full of flowering plants and ferns, there’s a herb garden and hosts of flowering pots – some in the seats of old chairs. Sit here and watch the boats go by – an ideal viewpoint for the Round the Island Race.

The restaurant was once the former stables of the adjacent house, but is now much more spacious with windows all around and a blue and white theme. Breakfast is from a civilised 10am till 11.30 but only on Saturdays and Sundays, there’s a full menu all week with a few specials  plus a carvery on Sunday. Veg is grown locally by community project ‘The Land’ with more local produce on the menu and vegetarian and vegan options.

Ales on tap are Island Brewery’s Yachtsmans Ale and Sharps Doom Bar along with San Miguel, Carlsberg, Somersby Cider and Guiness. Plus there’s over a dozen wines including sparkling and Champagne and the local Adgestone wine. Isle of Wight Mermaid Gin and Sea Salt Vodkas are also on sale and they serve Bristot coffees.
