Known for the fact that Benedict Cumberbatch and wife Sophie hired it for their post wedding Sunday lunch with friends, the Sun Inn at Hulverstone is a cute thatched country pub with far reaching views to the sea. Steeped in 600 years of history, you can soak in its olde worlde charm.

Likely to have been the haunt of smugglers in days of yore, the pub has a loyal local clientele and is especially popular with holiday makers who come to explore the beautiful West Wight area. Open from 11am till 11pm, and sometimes later, the pub has a large car park with overflow.

The oldest part of the pub is the bar area, which has a huge open fire with wood burner and horse brasses, stone walls, flagstone floor and exposed oak beams. Live music is performed in the far end of this room on Friday and Saturday nights, and Sunday afternoons.

A large dining room has been added to the rear of the pub, which has beamed room dividers with books on them – giving a bit of a country library effect and there are more tables in the large lawned garden.

The menu has Chef’s Grill, Classics, Seafood, Veggie and Salad options with lite bites, sandwiches and ploughman’s and there’s a well-stocked Specials Board that features local seafood in the summer.

A wine list complements the menu and beers on tap are Abbot Ale, Upham Punter, Youngs Special and sometimes Ale of Wight. Guiness, Amstel, Kronenburg 1664 and Fosters are also on draught.
