Bang smack in the middle of Ventnor seafront, beneath the iconic Metropole apartment building, is the popular Met Bar, serving tapas, fine wines and cake to locals and visitors alike. The minute the sun comes out the tables fill, and in the winter you can watch the rolling waves, snug inside.

Blankets are even offered to those sitting on the terrace overlooking the sea for those slightly cooler evenings, and there are a host of tables here with jaunty red and white polka dot table cloths. This area is covered by a glass awning, although the tables on the roadside catch the sun.

Inside the ambience is warm and welcoming with comfy leather chairs and banquettes, and higher stools in the bar area. There’s a raised seating area to one side and exposed brickwork features give a slightly Spanish/European feel to the interior.

Large brass lanterns hang from corners, ceiling fans are in operation for the summer months, potted plants with fairy lights feature and huge canvasses by local photographers are on the walls.

Tapas is on offer all day until around 10pm, with loads of sharing dishes plus half a dozen special options on a blackboard by the food counter. Another blackboard offers the pizza varieties and a third has fresh fish dishes, plus you can have tea, coffee and cake.

There’s a long list of over 60 wines, lagers on tap are Kronenburg 1664, Birra Moretti along with Guinness and Stowford Press Cider and ales are available in bottles.
