This antique structure, built of cast iron in 1880, is over 2,000 ft long. It was protected from rusting by being covered in pitch.
In 1992 a second-hand DC electric powered narrow-gauge (2 ft) railway was purchased to carry passengers to the pier head for embarkation from Hythe to Southampton by ferry.
The ferry service (which claims to date back to the thirteenth century) is still in operation, leaving from Town Quay at frequent intervals. Hythe village is picturesque, and is well worth a visit.
