Head of Commercial Retail Food & Beverage (VAC2279) - Full Time, Permanent

As we continue to grow our business, we are looking for a Head of Commercial Retail, Food & Beverage to join us and lead the Commercial retail team in driving our strategic offering across our on-board and shoreside estate.

We currently have 26 outlets across 11 locations, and are looking to build on recent investments across vessels and terminals to develop our product offering. Further investments are planned for the remaining terminals to continue to grow the revenue stream.

As we recover from a turbulent period within the travel and hospitality industry, and with an ambitious but achievable 5-year business plan, we are looking for the right individual to seize this fantastic opportunity. We will give you the flexibility and autonomy to develop and enhance a commercial retail strategy which aligns with our customer expectations and forecasted growth. We want you to bring the experience, knowledge, and creativity required to bring this role to life, and we’ll support you with our brilliant culture, amazing colleagues and continued investment into the development of our people.

Your key objective will be to drive revenue through retail spend (both food and non-food) and you’ll have experience of achieving this through leading a retail commercial function in a previous role. You will be the key link between the commercial strategy and operational delivery, and will be able to influence and motivate colleagues, with a key disposition for people management and numbers. You’ll be able to bring an entrepreneurial flair to Red Funnel which is infectious across our colleagues, and underpinned by your ability to provide robust, logical business cases which evidences the forecasted commercial return to the Organisation.

Other job responsibilities include:

  • Managing the product development and implementation process of new and existing product lines.
  • Enhancing our range of retail items, targeting our customer segments with appealing products and taking into account changing trends, consumer behaviours and seasonal variances.
  • Developing departmental budgets and accurately forecasting performance of products.
  • Ensuring promotional activity, in conjunction with Marketing and Operational teams, to drive maximum impact and seamless delivery.

What we’re looking for from you:

  • Strong experience in leading retail commercial functions as a Head of Retail, or similar position within the travel, transport or hospitality industry.
  • Proven track record of working collaboratively with Operational teams to deliver Commercial strategy.
  • Experience in identifying and anticipating shifts in consumer trends to ensure maximum return on product ranges.
  • Track record of successfully setting pricing strategy to drive sales and perception of value for money.
  • Proven ability to develop a ground-up strategy for new sites, identifying potential partners in keeping with brand identity and implementing profitable retail strategies to grow revenue.
  • Proven experience in setting and delivering budgets and stretch targets and ensuring that Executive teams are provided with the required information to assess the success of strategic plans.

HR Administrator (VAC2286) - Full Time, Permanent

We have an exciting opportunity for two HR Administrators to join us on a permanent basis. Supported by friendly and dedicated colleagues in our small, busy HR team, we are looking for candidates who have experience in administration and would like to put that into practice in a HR environment. In addition to being a strong administrator, you will need to be extremely organised with attention to detail, be competent in Microsoft Office and be able to work cohesively as part of a team. You will also possess an empathetic and personable demeanour. As the HR function handles a wide range of sensitive information, the right candidate must demonstrate a confidential and professional approach at all times.

The roles will encompass both HR and Learning & Development and be split between the Marine and Shoreside business areas. The role is varied and includes such tasks as the recording of certification and training records; issue of joining instructions; e-learning platform administration; generation and tracking of purchase orders; creation of employment contracts; recruitment administration; employment references; travel pass creation and handling employee queries.

Applications are welcome from candidates who have previously worked in HR or Learning & Development, but this is not essential. The successful candidate will work 40 hours a week Monday to Friday based in our Bugle Street office.

Shunt Driver (VAC2254) - Full Time, Permanent

A great opportunity has arisen for a Shunt Driver to join us on leave relief. This role is on a full time, permanent basis in our Southampton Terminal.

To us, health and safety is key in being able to operate our ferries successfully, along with our fantastic reputation for efficiency. This role will be pivotal to supporting both these areas, and will include the safe movement of drop trailers on and off our vessels, as well as in and around the yard.
This requires a great deal of communication with both our freight customers and internal stakeholders, so you will be confident in addressing a whole range of individuals. It’s also key to us that the successful candidate enjoys team work, as the logistics related to the role requires everyone to pull together to support all yard responsibilities within the terminal.

With at least two years’ LGV1 experience and preferably a valid ADR certificate, you will ideally be used to operating tug masters/tractor units in confined areas. Previous experience within a customer service based environment would be an advantage. You’ll also be able to deal with pressure effectively, especially as we work to tight schedules and it can get very busy at peak times.

Main duties include:

  • To shunt and manoeuvre trailers, using a tug master on and off ferries, ensuring safe storage.
  • To co-ordinate the drop trailer movements in both our Southampton and Island terminals, ensuring close liaison with relevant customers and colleagues.
  • To welcome our customers in a caring and friendly manner, anticipating their needs and creating an excellent impression of the organisation and our service.
  • To carry out visual inspections of the tug master, prior to driving, to check for damages or defects

Engineer  Officer (VAC2184) - Full Time, Contract

If you’re looking for a role which allows you to do the job you love and stay close to home, with a regular work/life balance, then we are currently looking for someone to become an integral part of our on-board maintenance team as an Engineer Officer reporting to the Chief Engineer.

You’ll be responsible for the operation and maintenance of propulsion and auxiliary machinery, together with all technical on-board systems. Other duties will include the maintenance of galley and passenger services equipment, fabric maintenance of machinery spaces and receipt of fuel oil and lubricating oil bunkers. In addition, you’ll be expected to assist the deck crew with the operation of the hydraulic equipment associated with loading practices.

You will on occasion be required to relieve Chief Engineers when they are on leave.

You will need a minimum of an STCW95 EOOW certificate with recent seagoing experience, and should have a good working knowledge of the maintenance requirements of medium speed diesels and their associated electro-hydraulic systems, as well as a working knowledge of computer systems. You must also be able diagnose and rectify faults in a wide range of machinery, including propulsion systems. Good communication skills are paramount as are excellent written and verbal skills.

Hours are based on a 41 per week, working on a rostered shift system covering a 22-hour operation, over 7 days a week. Accommodation isn’t available on-board so it’s key that you reside a commutable distance from our Southampton terminals.

Cleaner (VAC2217) - Full Time, Contract

WelWe are currently looking for a seasonal Cleaning Operatives to join the facilities team over the summer here at Red Funnel.

There are fixed term roles finishing October 31st 2021, working on the ferries but with potential to be in any of our Terminal locations too.

This role is critical to our continued sanitisation standards within the Covid framework.

Working as part of the team you will be tasked with maintaining the highest standards of cleanliness: your role is primarily to keep locations looking in tip top condition. You will have an eye for detail, can-do attitude and be used to working in public locations where customer interaction is inevitable. Above all your positive attitude will shine through.

In brief duties include but are not limited to:

  • General cleaning
  • Vacuuming
  • Washing & polishing surfaces
  • Toilet cleaning & emptying public area bins


This role will primarily work on a rotating shift pattern of two days on, two days off, coving all seven days of the week. The role may include late finishes and early starts and has an element of lone working. For training purposes the initial shift patterns will be based out of Southampton.
