You'll be working in a unique and busy fast paced environment with an excellent opportunity to show your creativity and passion in delivering superb customer service. You will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the food and beverage offer within our terminal areas and ensuring first class service delivery.

You’ll need excellent face-to-face communication and customer service skills gained through significant experience within a ‘front-line’ customer orientated environment. A hands on, pro active approach will be key to achieving the company/ department objectives. Successful applicants will also need to possess excellent team player skills.

Signature Lounge Assistant (VAC2230) - Full Time, Contract

Our exclusive Signature Lounge provides our guests with an enhanced passenger experience, including complimentary refreshments and upgraded facilities. We’re now recruiting for fixed term Signature Lounge Assistants to join us to provide courteous and efficient customer care. Joining our teams on board, you’ll deliver the smooth running of this service by greeting passengers, attentively serving them food and beverage and engaging with them throughout their journey to ensure a first-class experience.

As someone with experience in front of house environments, you’ll be able to provide an outstanding service to customers in the Signature lounge, with a charismatic and polished demeanour. When the lounge is not in use, you’ll also be able to offer the same level of customer service across other areas of the ship.

We offer full training, including ship safety and emergency procedures. This role offers 42 hours a week over 7 days.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Dealing with on board upgrades and enquiries from customers

We have an exciting opportunity for a Fixed Term Master to join our ro-ro fleet until the end of the summer season.

Reporting to one of the Senior Masters, you will be responsible for the safe operation of the ship and the effective

leadership and performance of your crew. Experience of marine passenger operations is preferred, as your work will be focused on leading your crew to ensure that our vessels are at all times operated to the highest standards of safety and
efficiency.

Your excellent communication, interpersonal and organisational skills will ensure that your crew is motivated to achieve departmental goals and objectives. You will be required to work under pressure, whilst maintaining a high degree of concentration and care, and at the same time, excel at dealing with difficult customers in a polite, friendly, yet firm manner.

Your keen eye for detail will ensure that onboard maintenance and training requirements are met and that the associated records are accurately maintained. A natural ‘people person’, you will enjoy working as part of the larger Company team in order to deliver the excellent level of customer service that characterises our business.

Hours are based on 41 hours per week, working on a rostered shift system covering a 22-hour operation, over 7 days a week. Accommodation isn’t available on-board so it’s key that you reside a commutable distance from our Southampton terminals.

We are currently recruiting Deck Mates to join our team on board our Ro-Ro ferries in full time, fixed term roles until September 2021.

As a Deck Mate, your duties will be of a supervisory nature, ensuring safe operations, maintenance of the ships and equipment whilst providing excellent customer service in all areas as required and directed by the Master and Mate.

Under direction, you will allocate duties to the Deck Hands, supervise onboard maintenance, report and rectify defects, take soundings, assist with bunkering and maintain daily records of tasks undertaken by the crew. Additionally, under direction, you will be responsible for the inspection of emergency gear and safe stowage of wheeled freight to ensure maximum space utilisation, together with helmsman and lookout duties.

Our shift system covers a 22-hour operation, 7 days a week, and this position is with our dedicated night crew who keep our service running around the clock. Accommodation isn’t available on-board so it’s key that you reside a commutable distance from our Southampton terminals.

You must have previous experience as deck crew in a seagoing role, with preferably an EDH or AB certificate, and must be able to demonstrate a high level of Customer Service skill, ensuring that our customers have an enjoyable and safe experience. You will have good leadership skills so that you can manage the crew and support the Master in the implementation of company policies. You must be well presented, have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and have the ability to work under pressure.You will be required to hold, or obtain, an ENG1 medical examination.

Shunt Driver (VAC2232) - Full Time, Contract

Red Funnel is the original Isle of Wight ferry company with a history spanning 150 years. Today, we're a modern, integrated transport, travel and leisure company carrying over 3 million passengers and freight every year, between Southampton and the Isle of Wight.

A great opportunity has arisen for a Shunt Driver to join us on a full time, fixed term basis in our Southampton Terminal. This is a full time role working a rostered shift pattern over 7 days a week, working on a 4 on 4 off shift pattern (2 days, 2 nights).

To us, health and safety is key in being able to operate our ferries successfully, along with our fantastic reputation for efficiency. This role will be pivotal to supporting both these areas, and will include the safe movement of drop trailers on and off our vessels, as well as in and around the yard. This requires a great deal of communication with both our freight customers and internal stakeholders, so you will be confident in addressing a whole range of individuals. It’s also key to us that the successful candidate enjoys team work, as the logistics related to the role requires everyone to pull together to support all yard responsibilities within the terminal.

With at least two years’ LGV1 experience and preferably a valid ADR certificate, you will ideally be used to operating tug masters/tractor units in confined areas. Previous experience within a customer service based environment would be an advantage. You’ll also be able to deal with pressure effectively, especially as we work to tight schedules and it can get very busy at peak times.

Main duties include:
• To shunt and manoeuvre trailers, using a tug master on and off ferries, ensuring safe storage.
• To co-ordinate the drop trailer movements in both our Southampton and Island terminals, ensuring close liaison
with relevant customers and colleagues.
• To welcome our customers in a caring and friendly manner, anticipating their needs and creating an excellent
impression of the organisation and our service.
• To carry out visual inspections of the tug master, prior to driving, to check for damages or defects

A great opportunity has arisen for a Shunt Driver to join us on leave relief. This role is on a full time, permanent basis in our Southampton Terminal.

To us, health and safety is key in being able to operate our ferries successfully, along with our fantastic reputation for efficiency. This role will be pivotal to supporting both these areas, and will include the safe movement of drop trailers on and off our vessels, as well as in and around the yard.
This requires a great deal of communication with both our freight customers and internal stakeholders, so you will be confident in addressing a whole range of individuals. It’s also key to us that the successful candidate enjoys team work, as the logistics related to the role requires everyone to pull together to support all yard responsibilities within the terminal.

With at least two years’ LGV1 experience and preferably a valid ADR certificate, you will ideally be used to operating tug masters/tractor units in confined areas. Previous experience within a customer service based environment would be an advantage. You’ll also be able to deal with pressure effectively, especially as we work to tight schedules and it can get very busy at peak times.

Main duties include:

  • To shunt and manoeuvre trailers, using a tug master on and off ferries, ensuring safe storage.
  • To co-ordinate the drop trailer movements in both our Southampton and Island terminals, ensuring close liaison with relevant customers and colleagues.
  • To welcome our customers in a caring and friendly manner, anticipating their needs and creating an excellent impression of the organisation and our service.
  • To carry out visual inspections of the tug master, prior to driving, to check for damages or defects

Engineer  Officer (VAC2184) - Full Time, Contract

If you’re looking for a role which allows you to do the job you love and stay close to home, with a regular work/life balance, then we are currently looking for someone to become an integral part of our on-board maintenance team as an Engineer Officer reporting to the Chief Engineer.

You’ll be responsible for the operation and maintenance of propulsion and auxiliary machinery, together with all technical on-board systems. Other duties will include the maintenance of galley and passenger services equipment, fabric maintenance of machinery spaces and receipt of fuel oil and lubricating oil bunkers. In addition, you’ll be expected to assist the deck crew with the operation of the hydraulic equipment associated with loading practices.

You will on occasion be required to relieve Chief Engineers when they are on leave.

You will need a minimum of an STCW95 EOOW certificate with recent seagoing experience, and should have a good working knowledge of the maintenance requirements of medium speed diesels and their associated electro-hydraulic systems, as well as a working knowledge of computer systems. You must also be able diagnose and rectify faults in a wide range of machinery, including propulsion systems. Good communication skills are paramount as are excellent written and verbal skills.

Hours are based on a 41 per week, working on a rostered shift system covering a 22-hour operation, over 7 days a week. Accommodation isn’t available on-board so it’s key that you reside a commutable distance from our Southampton terminals.

Cleaning Operative (VAC2217) - Full Time, Contract

We are currently looking for a seasonal Cleaning Operatives to join the facilities team over the summer here at Red Funnel.

There are fixed term roles finishing October 31st 2021, working on the ferries but with potential to be in any of our Terminal locations too.

This role is critical to our continued sanitisation standards within the Covid framework.

Working as part of the team you will be tasked with maintaining the highest standards of cleanliness: your role is primarily to keep locations looking in tip top condition. You will have an eye for detail, can-do attitude and be used to working in public locations where customer interaction is inevitable. Above all your positive attitude will shine through.

In brief duties include but are not limited to:

  • General cleaning
  • Vacuuming
  • Washing & polishing surfaces
  • Toilet cleaning & emptying public area bins


This role will primarily work on a rotating shift pattern of two days on, two days off, coving all seven days of the week. The role may include late finishes and early starts and has an element of lone working. For training purposes the initial shift patterns will be based out of Southampton.
