The Shipwreck Centre and Maritime Museum has the Isle of Wight's most extensive collection of fascinating artefacts that have been discovered over the years by dedicated diver Martin Woodward. A truly fascinating Island attraction visitors of all ages will enjoy.

The Shipwreck Centre & Maritime Museum was founded in 1978 by Martin Woodward, a professional diver by trade with a lifelong interest in shipwrecks and maritime history.

Martin first started diving on shipwrecks off the Isle of Wight in the 1960's and is extremely passionate about collecting and displaying maritime artefacts to the public. Martin opened up his first museum in Bembridge in 1978. In 2006 the museum expanded and moved to Arreton Barns, where it houses the largest exhibition of its kind in the UK.

The Shipwreck Centre is bursting with thousands of shipwreck relics and treasures from the deep, including beautiful “Pieces of Eight”, Spanish gold, and items salvaged from galleons, steamships, and wartime submarines. It also hosts fascinating displays of antique diving equipment, Isle of Wight prehistory, dramatic shipwreck stories, pirates, smuggling, ship models and much more.

Since 2017 the Maritime Archaeology Trust, a Southampton based charity, now manages the museum with Martin.

Facilities at the Shipwreck Centre include toilets with disabled access, baby changing facilities and a gift shop. There is also full disabled access and family accessibility for pushchairs and buggies. Free car parking on site. While visiting you can also wander around Arreton Barns and visit the variety of shops in the craft village.
