Here’s to a Wight Christmas (Market)

With Christmas now firmly on the horizon, the Wife and I decided it would be a great idea to take the girls to a Christmas market. We were inspired when we popped over on the Red Jet to Southampton the other day and saw the outdoor ice rink and German Christmas market all set up in the city centre, with Christmas lights and Santa aerial displays.

As they always do these things so well on the continent, I’ve been mulling over the best destination to take them to… Vienna, Prague, Strasbourg. But then the Wife pointed out that there are loads of Christmas markets taking place right here on the Island – which apparently will give me more to spend on presents (for her I’m guessing!).

And she was quite right, there are lots, so I thought I’d share some of the upcoming markets you too can visit this season.

I Love Wight Christmas Market– 24th & 25th November

Returning or its 5th year at this market featured lots of stalls selling Isle of Wight artisan products as well as music, mulled wine and mince pies! Taking place at the Garlic Farm, Newchurch from 9am to 5pm.

Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary Christmas Market- Sunday 25th November

Open from 10am to 4pm this event is inside, so will take pace no matter the weather and with stalls, face painting and music everyone is welcome. This is a great charity to support and what animal is more synonymous with Christmas than a donkey!

Ventnor Winter Garden Christmas Market– 24th & 25th November

This market has all sorts of Christmas goodies and stalls and will also feature carol singers to help get everyone in the Christmas spirit. Open from 11am to 7pm each day.

Bembridge Gift Fair– 1st & 2nd December

This popular Christmas gift fair this year is in aid of Earl Mountbatten Hospice. With 30 unique stalls it’s the perfect event to pick up some unique Christmas gifts, while supporting a fantastic local charity. This one is not a free event with tickets on Friday 1st December (5pm to 8pm) costing £10 for an exclusive preview evening which includes wine and canapés. While entrance is just £2 on the door for the main event on Saturday 2nd December (10am to 3pm). But the car parking is free!

Northwood House Christmas Fair– 1st & 2nd December

Open from 10am to 4pm this festive fair is set in the beautiful historic surroundings of Northwood House, Cowes. With local artisan and gift stalls and a Santa’s Grotto – you can even get your dog’s photo taken with Santa when you visit Santa Paws!

German Christmas Market – 8th & 9th December

Billed as an authentic German Christmas Market – there will be German festive food, including waffles, bratwurst, reibekuchen, gingerbread and warming gluhwein and hot chocolate - as well as Island produce, gifts and crafts, and live carols from Island artists. This event takes place at Cowes Baptist Church from 10am to 6pm on the Saturday and 12 noon to 4pm on Sunday.

I still might take the famiy off Island in search of snow and that authentic festive feeling, but then again looking at the weather forecast I may not need to.

Here’s to a Wight Christmas!
