Top Picks for Island Con 2018

After a hugely successful debut in 2017, Island Con returns in 2018 on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st October, this time at the new location of Cowes Enterprise College. Welcoming people from all over the world, tickets have been sold as far afield as Singapore, Malaysia, South Africa and the U.S. 

This year sees some very special guests at the event including rare exclusive UK appearances of Jackass star Bam Margera, Jay and Silent Bob’s Jason Mewesand Mortal Kombat’s Cary Hiroyuki Tagawa. 

There’s going to be a special guest appearance by Paul McGann who played the eighth incarnation of Doctor Who in a 1996 television film and is also the star of cult film Withnail and I. Plus the 7th Doctor Who Sylvester McCoy will be attending, along with Sophie Aldred who played Colin Baker’s Doctor’s companion Ace. Two Power Rangers will be in attendance: Wesley Collins and Red Ranger, Jason Faunt and Justin Stewart and Blue Ranger, Blake Foster. Hammer Horror legend Valerie Leon will be there, and fans of The Crow will be excited to learn that one of Hollywood’s most famous Asian actresses, Bai Ling will be at the event. All of these actors are available for photographs and autographs and need to be booked at the pre-order store.

There’s a live stage at the event, sponsored by Wightfibre, with a packed schedule running all weekend. You can hear most of the guests in live stage interviews, Q&As and panel discussions and this is included in your general entry ticket. 

The Island Con Indie brand has a whole host of up and coming national film actors and actresses, along with producers and directors, who will be coming to Island Con to promote themselves and their work. Meet independent film and TV industry creatives and learn about new innovative projects. Plus some of these people’s careers may just be about to take off and you may make interesting contacts.

Island Con’s comic book line-up includes some of Transformer’s greatest creatives, including Geoff Senior who has made a special ‘Grimlock/Megatron Isle of Wight Battle’ design being sold exclusively at Island Con. Geoff joins fellow Marvel UK artists Andrew Wildman and Simon Furman.

Many people dress up for the day and ‘The Master of Disguise’ Cosplay Zone is a gathering point for all cosplayers throughout the day. If you fancy showing off your cosplay then Island Con’s masquerade is free to enter and there are prizes on offer. If gaming is your thing then be sure to check out PC Consultants Gaming Zone.

And if there’s one area at the event that always attracts attention it’s the IW Garrison’s Star Wars Zone. This year RWA Creations have donated a full sized, wearable Stormtrooper helmet, worth over £200, and for every £2 entry you will receive one draw entry into to win it. Based on the original 'stunt' design from the 1977 film ‘Star Wars: A New Hope’, this iconic helmet has been hand built and painted. The prize winner will be announced after 4pm on Sunday 21st Oct 2018 at Island Con.

With a bigger focus on families this year, there will be a Kids’s Zone run primarily by the wonderful Enchanted Isle with Disney princesses, workshops, bouncy castle, superheroes and pirates. Wight Trash will be running a Skate Zone for skaters of all ages, and the Dino Zone will have baby dinosaurs on show with full fossil display and real-life dinosaur handlers and rangers. Plus workshops and public talks from the rangers throughout the weekend and even a virtual reality dinosaur experience.
