Chessell Pottery Cafe, Brook

Nestled in the picturesque village of Brook in West Wight, Chessell Pottery is a unique place to visit – and not just for lunch. You and the kids can also come and design your pottery to take home with you. The charming Courtyard Café caters for all sorts of palates (gluten and dairy free treats are also available) and serves a range of tasty light lunches with an emphasis of most of the food being locally sourced ingredients. The café is also licensed so for the parents you can enjoy a glass of wine, or real local Ale with your dish. The menu features all of the local producers (meats, eggs, cheese, tomatoes, strawberries) and everything is freshly prepared from home made soup, pasta and salads, to home baked pastries and an amazing array of cakes, delicious scones, as well as home made jams and chutney. Kids lunch 'bags' are available for £4.95 including a jam, ham, cheddar or marmite sandwich, a bag of Tyrell's no salt crisps, veg sticks, a homemade cookie and juice carton or water.

Top Tip: You might want to extend your lunch into Afternoon tea as the café is also home of the award winning myIsleofWight ‘Best Afternoon/ Cream Tea’.

The café offers light snacks and drinks and allows parents to sit and relax while their young ones zip across the playbarn on the zipwire or climb the hay bale mountain. Across the grass the restaurant is where it’s all about the Cow – with burgers, pies, steaks and much more on offer. Eat up on the mezzanine and take in the grand sweeping views across Afton Down towards Tennyson Down and the sea.

Top Tip: Make a day of it and visit Adventure Activities Isle of Wight located on site to try mountain boarding, rock climbing or zorbing to name but a few activities on offer.

The Dandelion Café, Freshwater Bay

A 2012 myIsleofWight Award winner, the views from the Dandelion Café perched high above Freshwater Bay in the West Wight are worth a visit on that merit alone. But the real reason why this cheerful café is such a hit with parents is because children are well catered for here. Outside in the beautiful gardens is a sizeable children’s playground to keep your little ones amused. There’s even a grass tennis court and a heated outdoor swimming pool too. Inside there are comfy leather chairs and sofas for lounging, if more preferable than the dining room. Most of the Dandelion food is homemade, from hearty soups such as leak & potato to a big selection of sandwiches and an array of ‘lite’ bites (crab salad, chicken liver pate, Greek salad) or large bites (lamb herb mash sausages, pan fried pork steaks) to local specialities (fish platter or prawn cocktail) and plenty of cakes.

Top Tip: An absolute must is the excellent coffee - the staff are fully trained to whip up any coffee you like.
