Guide to the Best B&B Breakfast

The Isle of Wight is packed with great B&B places to stay. So we thought it good to know where to eat the best B&B breakfast from a hearty full Monty, healthy and homegrown to simply something different.  So here are our top picks.

Newnham Farm, Binstead

Staying on a working farm has all sorts of unforeseen glories. At Newnham Farm B&B, a beautiful 17th century farmhouse with its own extensive garden, the house is nestled in the middle of the 350 acre working farm.  The area itself is listed as 'outstanding landscape with ancient woodland and medieval fishponds. Here you can roam around the gardens or explore the 40 acres of private woodland. There are two sunny and spacious en suite double bedrooms and you’re like to be woken up with the small of crisply frying bacon and freshly brewed coffee.

The breakfast... At Newnham you get a farmhouse breakfast to remember. You can take as long as you like by the log fire in the handsomely beamed dining room. The owners, John and Di Cleaver use the freshest local produce and their own homemade jam and marmalades, home grown fresh fruit, and homemade compote. They also have beehives on the farm so there is plenty of honey and homemade seeded bread to spread it on. A tasty treat is the locally smoked salmon and scrambled eggs (local, of course).

The Caledon Guest House, Cowes

Winner of Excellence 2013 as voted by Tripadvisor, The Caledon exudes a cheerful friendly ambiance. It’s a family run affair, situated in the heart of Cowes and although the guesthouse is modern in feel, plenty of Victorian features give the house much character. It’s often described as a ‘home from home’. You’re guaranteed of a warm welcome and their Caledon breakfasts are much talked about by guests.

The breakfast... Everything is freshly cooked to order using as much Island produce as possible and the breakfast menu is enormous  (Mark’s Nearly Famous Fry Up, The Caledon Stack, to mushrooms, tomatoes, smoked salmon, scrambled eggs). You can be sure of a hearty breakfast with a capital H. On their website there is a food map that even shows you exactly where they source their food from on the Island.

The Little Gloster, Gurnard

The beauty about The Little Gloster in Gurnard, just outside Cowes, is that not only can you stay here in one of the three B&B rooms, that it is also a destination restaurant – and a hugely successful one, right on the water’s edge with spectacular view across the Solent. Popular with the locals and holidaymakers alike, the kitchen serves up first class modern cuisine. The owner and talented chef, Ben Cooke offers a distinctly Scandinavian tone  – not just in the kitchen, but the surrounding interiors (huge open-plan dining area, long wood tables, wooden floors throughout).  A very well stocked bar with faultlessly attentive staff add to the impeccable quality of the place. The three beautiful en suite B&B rooms all have sea views and don the whitewashed Scandi look.

The breakfast... There’s a staggering choice for breakfast – from berry museli and yoghurt to gthe healthy booster breakfast (orange, pomegranate, mint & chilli syrup, museli & yoghurt to the usual big fry up with an array of local produce or variations of Egg’s Benedict.

Bedford Lodge, Shanklin

Beford Lodge has been receiving guests for over 150 years and is clearly doing something right. Built in the 1840s overlooking the Chine, the lodge is ideally situated in the beautiful Shanklin Old Village. Set in its own south facing, private gardens with sloping lawns, mature trees, flowering bushes and a sun terrace with views towards the Downs, The Bedford is very much situated in an idyllic spot.

The breakfast... The hearty (and relaxed) breakfasts are also much praised by guests - with unlimited amounts of tea and toast, you can always take a cuppa and sit in the lounge with a paper if you want to. They’ll accommodate any diet too (they stock Soya milk and vegetarian products).
