Fish & Chips - The Top 5

Nothing says 'By the Seaside' like fresh fish and chips covered in salt and vinegar, eaten hot out of the paper. So in true British seaside tradition we thought we'd give you our guide to the Top 5 places to get the best fish in your hand across the Isle of Wight.

No 1. Totally Local

Coming in top of the board is Ventnor Fish Haven for their stunning freshly caught and cooked totally seasonal fish and chips - or try their stunning crab and chips featured on The Hairy Bikers television programme! Ventnor Fish Haven is the iconic building in Ventnor located on the pier above the harbour, its New England facade home to a wet fish shop - selling freshly caught fish and shellfish daily - and also the take away where you can buy local sustainable fish that has literally just come straight off the fishing boats.

The fishery not only sells fresh fish and shellfish, but they cook it for you too. Beyond the customary cod and haddock, you can nosh on hand battered Skate, Pollack, Plaice, Tiger Prawn Tails, Rock Salmon and Mackerel. Everything served is freshly prepared in-house such as Ventnor Haven Fishcakes, Crab Croquettes, Onion Rings, Apple Fritters and even lime and coriander sauce or lemon Mayonnaise. Local’s choice - the crab samosa and chips - yum.

No.2 Traditional Classic

Wights Fish & Chip Shop in Ryde is a true British seaside classic - harking back to an era when people would want to eat their fish and chips in a restaurant rather than out of the paper! As well as beautifully cooked fish and chips, Wights has both a take away and a sit down restuarant and offers some lovely extras, like locally sourced burgers served with Isle of Wight Blue Cheese as well as a wine list!

No.3 Away from the Water

So for freshly cooked fabulous crispy fish and chips, with no water in sight - Brothers fish and chip shop in Brading is a must visit.  Having won national Fish & Chip shop awards this humble chippy is renowned on the Island for its fayre - be ready to wait though for they are all freshly cooked! For the best mobile fish and chip takeaway try The Jolly Fryer. Family run the owners have been visiting villages around the Island for over 20 years. What’s more you can phone through with your order (07968 351757) and they have it ready for your collection. Or just turn up at any of their locations and place your order. They visit five different villages weekly.

No.4 Award Winning

Three times winner of the myIsleofWight Award for Best Fish and Chips in Your Hand, as voted for by Island visitors and locals alike, is Corries Cabin in Cowes. Located on the high cobbled high street, this is the perfect spot for those newspaper wrapped succulent fish and crispy proper chip shop chips. Grab your feast and pop over to sit on the wall in the yacht haven overlooking all the yachts.

No.5 Crabtastic

On the southern side of the Island, The Crab Shed, in Steephill Cove outside Ventnor prides itself on its reputation for their incredible crab pasties, made from freshly caught crab that morning from their fishing boat in the cove.  The Crab Shed is well known for their delicious crab, which is cooked and hand picked on the premises. Try the ever-popular crab pasties and mackerel ciabattas.  Now licensed, you choose from a selection of well-chosen wines to compliment the seafood or take it away and pitch up on the sandy cove beach just a few meters away.
