Artisan Island Living. Meet the Makers this year on your visit to the Island.
If beaches on every coast, walking routes galore, eateries, activities and fabulous family days out weren't enough, a visit to the Isle of Wight wouldn't be complete without taking an Artisan gift back home. Something created by a person you have actually met. Made with love, to the highest quality, and perfectly unique.
Each month over the year I'll be introducing you to just a few of the makers and creators who live and work on the Island. You'll have the chance to see what drives them to produce beautiful artwork, jewellery, books and bespoke furniture. I'll share how they balance an inspirational work environment, I write and sketch at my beach hut in the summer at Colwell Bay and our feature photographer sees dawns and dusks most of us sleep through, with our very special Island lifestyle.
If you are visiting you can meet the maker in person too. I'll often be out running with my dogs Spike and Milo around the West Wight, feel free to join us on one of our 5k runs just send a WOOF! to Spike through trottingdog.com. Or follow his couch to 5k running dogblog on myIsleofWight The Local's Blog under Spike the Vizsla starting in mid January to see the trails we are exploring.
As the weather warms up come and find me at the beach where I will happy talk about my illustration work or read my latest children's book for you. “On the Trail of the Queen's Jewels" is out in April and set at Osborne House in East Cowes. Yes, there is a coastal theme here with my lifestyle, that's what happens when you only live 5 minutes from the sea!
All of our makers can be found online with their own shops or on Etsy so you can even gift things to others as well as treating yourself after you return home. If you use social media then keep an eye on #MeetTheMakerIOW for exclusives and previews over the year.
Lastly, don't forget to follow My Isle of Wight on Twitter and Instagram @myisleofwight. We love to hear from you and share your stories, especially the makers themselves as customers are truly at the heart of their trade.
