Rain or Shine: Guide to Kids Attractions

The Isle of Wight is famous for being the destination to come to with children for family holidays. In all weathers there is something to do and see across this beautiful isle, and so to give a steer on what to do rain or shine, here are our top picks this season.

Get Outdoors

Following seven successful years of Haven Falconry, owners Paul and Sally Martin have invested in a dedicated Bird of Prey Centre, a new tourist destination for the Isle of Wight. Located within the grounds of IW Steam Railway the Centre is open daily throughout the year except Christmas Day.

The centre was completed in the springtime this year, and is home to over 50 birds of 21 different species from all over the world as well as a small collection of reptiles, the amusing Ferret Skywalk, Pets Corner and Insect Hotel.

The emphasis is 'Hands-On', ensuring you get up-close-and-personal with the birds and there are daily flying displays (weather dependent) and daily bird of prey talks along with bird and pet handling sessions. You can also buy combo tickets with the Steam Railway and go on the trains while you are there!

Wight Karting in Ryde offers a great time whatever the weather with its 500m all weather outdoor floodlit track. It’s an exhilarating load of fun for anyone aged 8 – 88. With a choice of track nights or days to choose from there’s a race to suit every ability and level of competitiveness!

Or if you’re more into channelling that competitiveness into working as a team then try Headhunters laser combat games just outside Newport. Pit your wits and battle across 20 aces of woodland and it doesn’t matter what the weather is doing, as you’ll end up covered in mud anyway, after crawling low through the undergrowth SAS style to avoid detection by the other team!

Headhunters, The Battleground, 20 Acre Copse, Briddlesford Road, Newport, Isle of Wight, PO30 2NU, 01983 520061.

Stay Indoors

If the idea of laser combat seemed appealing but you didn’t fancy getting all muddy – fear not the Island has two other Laser Quest centres – both indoor! Laser Quest Ryde is the ultimate sci-fi action adventure for all ages (6 - 66) and is open all day. While JR Zone in Newport runs evening sessions where you book, turn up, pay and play – for ages 7 and above.

Islejump in Lake is the Isle of Wight first indoor trampoline park. With 40 trampolines, foam pit, as well as dodge ball court and basketball nets – trampolining is a great activity that keeps you super fit too!  The angled trampolines mean you can bounce off the walls and very quickly progress to some really cool flips and jumps. The foam pit has a giant air bag for the most cushioned landings with three run up trampolines to give you an extra boost. This is the perfect spot on rainy day to work off that excess energy!

Islejump, Unit D1, Spithead Business Centre,Lake, Sandown, Isle of Wight, PO36 9PH, 01983 400444.

Tapnell Farm Park opened in spring 2016 and is a fantastic family attraction offering a great day out with animals, soft play, bouncing pillow and go carts to name but a few of the activities on offer.

The Farm Park is home to cute pigs, goats, donkeys, wallabies, meercats as well as smaller family favourites like fluffy bunnies and guinea pigs. Based on a real farm raising young dairy cows, the Farm Park also has a fantastic café and seating areas so you can enjoy a coffee while watching your young climb the giant hay bale maze, swing on the zip wires, dress up as farm animals or explore the soft play area. There’s great Wi-Fi too, to ensure parents don’t get bored!
