The Itchen Bridge was opened in 1977 by Princess Alexandra, and links Southampton with Woolston (on the Eastern bank). It is a high-level hollow box girder bridge spanning 800 metres. It is 28 metres at its highest point and weighs 62,000 tons. During the laying of the foundations a "time capsule" was buried, to enable future generations to appreciate life during the 1970's.
A toll is charged to motorists wishing to cross the river. Before the building of the bridge, a floating bridge or chain ferry had operated for over 140 years.
