Red Jet 1 returns from successful Torbay trial
30-09-2008 Red Jet 1 returned home to Southampton today after operating a trial 4-week service for Stagecoach between Torquay and Brixham in Devon.
Launched in partnership with Torbay Council, the Bayfast service has been a huge success carrying well in excess of 30,000 people on the 15 minute crossing which cuts more than an hour off the peak road-based journey times.
Red Funnel provided the 35 knot, 138 seat Red Jet 1 + crew + engineering support for the trial which ended at the weekend. The MTU engined, waterjet powered vessel proved to be 100% reliable and required only routine checks whilst away from home waters.
Richard Stevens, Operations Director for Stagecoach Devon, said: “We have been very pleased with the popularity of Bayfast during the trial and it has clearly captured the imagination of local people and visitors to the area. The trial was designed to test the market for a new water-based transport link and we attracted both leisure and commuter passengers to the park and sail concept. We have also been delighted with the performance of the craft itself, which has been able to operate in weather conditions which have forced other vessels to tie up.”
Mr Stevens added: “We have faced some challenges from congestion in and around the two harbour areas, however the feedback from passengers has been overwhelmingly positive."
