Walk the Wight returning in May

Visitors to the Isle of Weight in May might like to head along to this year's Walk the Wight event, which is returning this year in order to help raise funds for the Earl Mountbatten Hospice.

The main walk will begin in Bembridge and cross to Alum Bay, while a second flat walk for those who are less adventurous will be run from Sandown to Side, Newport.

Covering 26.5 and 14 miles respectively, neither of the walks is really for the faint of heart, but both also promise to offer a wonderful day out for all the family, taking in the exciting and often breathtaking beauty of the island in all its glory.

Both events are free to head along to, although all those who do wish to take part are advised they will have to pre-register, while they will also be required to raise funds for the hospice either through sponsorship for their efforts or by an individual donation by themselves.

Offering support and care to those individuals suffering from a life-limiting or fatal illness, the hospice helped more than 1,800 people in 2011/12 and currently benefits from more than 500 volunteers.

Walk the Wight is therefore expected to be extremely popular, with more than 10,000 people set to be taking to the walkways of the island in support of Earl Mountbatten.

Another event that helped to raise funds for the hospice in recent weeks was that of the annual Pete Durham Musical Mash-Up, which took place at the Melbourne Ardenlea Hotel in Shanklin on March 15th.

The event saw original compositions from talented musician Paul Armfield, as well as a number of other highlights, including a raffle and free dinner for guests.

Admission was free of charge, but donations to the hospice on the night were encouraged, with all the money being put towards the future upkeep of this important local service and facility.ADNFCR-3083-ID-801561956-ADNFCR
