Ventnor Fringe Festival creates a buzz

Get ready to grab your sunscreen and wellies: the Isle of Wight Ventnor Fringe Festival is almost here!

On August 14th-17th over 300 artists are set to take to the stage and display a dazzling range of talents.

The festival, started by a dedicated group of teens in 2010, provides an excellent platform for island artists to showcase their creative work. Run by students and graduates, the four-day event is filled to the brim with cultural flair.

This year you can catch the stunning, soulful voice of Liam Bailey - a rising star in pop music. His recent collaboration with Chase & Status reached number five in the UK singles chart.

Based on the world-renowned Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the event focuses on acts that are on the 'fringe', just outside of the mainstream. The celebration welcomes artists, dramatists, writers, poets and small businesses to enjoy the sea air.

The official 'V-Fringe' website calls the festival: "A unique blend between a metropolitan arts festival and the traditional field music festival that the Island is famous for."

Past performers have included indie singer Johnny Flynn, who has taken the London folk scene by storm.

Set in the picturesque Victorian seaside town, Ventnor offers a very different atmosphere than other Fringe festivals. It's the perfect mix of city and sprawling countryside for an eclectic bunch of artists, performers and musicians.

Coinciding with the event is the Isle of Wight Film Festival, which is on the lookout for quirky, moving films to delight the crowds.

Film festival director Bruce Webb said: "This is the seventh year we have held the best Isle of Wight Film competition, and as time goes on, the standard rises and the subject matter often surprises us."

Avid festival-fanatics will be happy to once again pack their rucksacks and head out for a spot of sun.

Prices vary and all events are individually ticketed, so make sure you find out who'll be there early.ADNFCR-3083-ID-801592425-ADNFCR
