The Caucasian Chalk Circle at the Trinity Theatre

A performance of Bertolt Brecht's classic The Caucasian Chalk Circle is set to be put on for audiences at the Trinity Theatre in Cowes.

The play is a tale of a servant girl who sacrifices everything to protect a child abandoned at the height of a civil war. Once order is restored in the country, the girl finds herself at the heart of a legal battle over custody of the young boy from his biological mother.

In a chilling twist, the judge presiding over the case orders the pair to face off in an ancient tradition of entering the 'chalk circle'.

It is a stark demonstration of the playwright's often vociferous and challenging dramatic style.

A German poet and playwright, Brecht was one of the most innovative dramatists of the 20th century and propounded the idea of exposing the inner workings of the theatre to demonstrate his productions as a representation of reality and not reality itself.

A life-long Marxist, Brecht wanted his audiences to leave his pieces with a sense of purpose. As such, he often did away with the dramatic principle of a cathartic climax to affairs on stage, instead preferring to leave his audiences in a state of excitement and even frenzy.

His works tackled many of the issues of post-war Europe in the 1940s and 50s, not least of which being the perceived breakdown of society and social morality following the rise of Nazism.

Showings will be held on September 19th, 20th, 21st, 26th, 27th and 28th, with tickets available for £7 for adults and £6 for under-16s. The curtain will rise on performances at 19:30 BST each evening.

The Trinity Theatre can be found on Bath Road in Cowes and is within easy walking distance - just four minutes - of the nearby West Cowes terminal of Red Funnel. It also offers adequate car parking for guests.ADNFCR-3083-ID-801618612-ADNFCR
