Take a two-wheeled trip to the Isle of Wight

Bradley Wiggins' stunning Tour de France victory in 2012 has seen many Britons take to the roads on two wheels as cycling becomes fashionable across the UK.

For holidaymakers who want to take in some scenery while out on their bike, the Isle of Wight could be a perfect destination - the island has been named in the Lonely Planet Travel Guide as one of the world's top ten destinations for cycling holidays and is known for its dramatic views and rolling hills.

According to the Lonely Planet Guide, the popular tourist destination offers "narrow lanes through tidy hedgerows, deep and mysterious green gullies, and the island's most striking feature, the ridge of white chalk cliffs stretching across its breadth".

The combination of relatively quiet roads and picturesque villages means sporty holidaymakers can enjoy a peaceful ride, while the small scale of the island makes it easy to see many of its most popular attractions by bike.

Historic properties that can easily be accessed by cyclists include Bembridge Windmill, Mottistone Manor Garden, Newtown Old Town Hall and the Needles Batteries.

For travellers looking for a challenge, the Round the Island road route - marked by blue and white signs - offers a good day out for keen cyclists.

Taking in around six miles of the island's beautiful countryside, the path includes plenty of stunning views and would be perfect for those on a weekend break hoping to see as much of the area as possible.

Alternatively, more adventurous bikers can go off-road and explore some of the island's bridleways and byways.

The Isle of Wight's status as a cycling destination is emphasised by the fact that a cycling festival is held in the area each September, with hundreds of bikers descending on the area for a packed programme of events.ADNFCR-3083-ID-801518266-ADNFCR
