She Bop A Lula celebrates female creativity

Heading to the Isle of Wight this summer? Why not enjoy stunning, never-before-seen images of some of the most iconic female singers in history at an exhibition taking place on the island.

She Bop A Lula is a celebration of the most successful and creative female vocalists over the last 60 years and would make for an enlightening experience during a short break on the Isle of Wight.

The exhibition features everyone from Billie Holiday to Lady Gaga - meaning there's something for everyone.

She Bop A Lula, running from now until September 15th at Dimbola Museum and Galleries by Freshwater Bay, features 70 fabulous pictures - featuring musical legends including Dusty Springfield, Janis Joplin, Madonna in a variety of settings - candid, backstage scenes, sensitive, personal moments, to the thrill of live performance.

Dede Millar, the curator of She Bop A Lula, said the exhibition sets out to highlight how women have often been sidelined in the history of popular music.

"She Bop A Lula will highlight the talent of women performers, as well as being a showcase for women photographers," she said.

"All the exhibits have been captured by talented and award-winning women photographers who bring a different perspective to music photography than their male colleagues, they capture the vulnerability and elegance of their subjects."

Other singers featured include Suzi Quatro, Nina Simone, Patti Smith, Jessie J, Kylie Minogue, Grace Jones, Amy Winehouse, Annie Lennox, Siouxsie Sioux, Debbie Harry, Shirley Bassey and Adele.

Dimbola, known as the best kept secret on the Isle of Wight, was the home of the celebrated Victorian photographer Julia Margaret Cameron.

Today it is a museum and gallery dedicated to her life and work and contemporary exhibitions from photographers around the globe.

Other events coming up at Dimbola include:

The Wonderland of Alice 4th May - 6th October 2013

A fascinating insight into the work of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland author Lewis Carroll.

This event features images by a wealth of illustrators based on the magic of Alice’s fantastic world.
