Sailing charities to set up youth club

Visitors to the Isle of Wight who enjoy nautical pursuits might like to get involved with a new venture that aims to showcase the delights of sailing to a younger generation.

The Isle of Wight County Press reports the United Kingdom Sailing Academy (UKSA), in association with the Island Youth Water Activity Centre (IYWAC) has contacted the Isle of Wight Council to reinstate a Cowes youth club, with the aim of promoting sailing to kids.

Open to locals and visitors alike, the venture will provide on-site facilities for teaching kids how to sail, as well as providing accommodation, shower and changing amenities, boat storage areas and new parking.

Both IYWAC and UKSA are keen to gain new members, and to promote the sport of sailing to young people is seen as a perfect opportunity to instil a hunger for this pastime in a new generation.

It is hoped the council will look favourably on the plans in the coming weeks, with initial signs proving positive as recommendations have been made that the scheme should be given the green light, providing the facilities are used for youth-related activities.

The news comes ahead of this year's Cowes Classics Week, which will be returning for its sixth year in July.

Running from the 15th to 19th, the event is open to all sailing classes and will see visitors from across the globe heading to Cowes to marvel at some of the finest yachts in the world, as well as to view daily races in a range of classes.

Meanwhile, the JP Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race regatta has been scheduled for June 1st, with the international event to draw in thousands of visitors to the Isle of Wight.

Entries are now being accepted for participants in all classes, with 2013 expected to be the biggest event to date.ADNFCR-3083-ID-801555192-ADNFCR
