Sail the Wight this weekend

Tourists on Isle of Wight holidays who are interested in sailing are in for a treat this weekend as a major event is taking place on the island.

As part of the island's celebrations to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, yachts will be sailing around the Isle of Wight in order to raise funds for the Earl Mountbatten Hospice.

According to the Isle of Wight County Press, the event was organised by East Cowes Sailing Club and Westerly Owners Association and forms part of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Regatta.

Sail the Wight was started in 2005 by an East Cowes Sailing Club member and has raised tens of thousands of pounds for the hospice already.

Sailors from all over the country will be travelling to the Isle of Wight to take part in the event, with two separate courses mapped out for the participants.

East Cowes Sailing Club will be hoping it is the best Sail the Wight yet, due to the fact the location is marking its centenary this year.

The event is set to take place on Sunday (June 3rd) and is sure to be popular among locals and those on Isle of Wight holidays this weekend.

It will get underway at the Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes and this is also where the finish line will be placed, while a fundraising al-fresco Sail the Wight barbecue party will also be taking place on the day.

There is lots to do on the Isle of Wight this weekend for those who want to celebrate the Queen's 60th anniversary of being on the throne, with actor Julian Wadham - who is most famous for his role in ITV's hit costume drama Downton Abbey - set to open Calbourne Jubilee Festival.

It starts today and runs all weekend, with a village fete, a cream tea dance and a live music show among the events planned for the fair.
