Royal Marines band to kick off festive concert season

The Royal Marines Concert Band will be visiting the Isle of Wight to kick off the festive season in style at the beginning of December.

Fresh from a busy year of engagements the length and breadth of mainland UK, the acclaimed brass band will be bringing their mixture of marching music and traditional tunes to the Shanklin Theatre on December 8th.

In all, the concert will see around 50 musicians, all of them selected for their skills and experience, take to the stage of the popular venue under the leadership of Captain David Cole, who was previously in charge of the entertainment on board the Royal Yacht Britannia.

Furthermore, support to the main Royal Marines Band will come from the players of the Corps of Drums.

Given the time of the year, it's more than likely Captain Cole will slot a few festive favourites into the evening's programme, alongside popular marches, big band classics and tunes from the stage and screen.

This will be the first time the Royal Marines Concert Band has performed at the Shanklin Theatre, with tickets costing from £15 and proceeds from the evening to go towards helping the work of Diabetes Research.

The concert is set to be just one of many as the Shanklin celebrates Christmas and the new year period in style.

Musical entertainment will come from the likes of former Squeeze singer and songwriter Glen Tilbrook, former Rolling Stones bass player Bill Wyman and his Rhythm Kings and several leading tribute acts, including the Take That Experience and One Night of Elvis.

Meanwhile, other shows due to take place over the month of December include an evening with former politician-turned-traveller Michael Portillo and, of course, the annual family panto, which this time will be Rapunzel.

As well as its shows, the Shanklin Theatre is a tourist destination in itself, dating back to 1879, a member of the nationwide Theatres Trust and one of the island's best-loved landmarks.
