Registration open for Walk the Wight

Keen walkers hoping to see some of the Isle of Wight's impressive scenery while raising money for a good cause may wish to register for the annual Walk the Wight event, which is set to take place on May 13th.

The fundraiser, organised to secure donations for the Ear Mountbatten Hospice, is now accepting applicants.

Some 12,000 people are expected to take part in what is the establishment's biggest fundraiser of the year, with four different walks available to choose from for those interested in taking part.

The original main walk of 26.5 miles from Bembridge to the Needles at Alum Bay is the best-known, and enables ramblers to see many of the island's most beautiful sights.

Predominantly taking place along walking trails, including the Bembridge and Tennyson paths, the event also allows visitors to access some private land that is closed for the rest of the year.

It is broken down into two stages, the 12.5-mile stretch between the start at Bembridge to our checkpoint at Carisbrooke and the 14-mile walk from Carisbrooke to the finish at Alum Bay, with enthusiasts invited to take part in any of these three distances.

Additionally, the popular Flat Walk from Sandown High School to Thompson's Trees in Newport, which is around eight miles long, is part of the event.

"This is an excellent introduction to Walk the Wight for families and other people who may not be comfortable taking on the hills of the main walk," according to the organisers.

Earl Mountbatten Hospice is an independent charity providing comprehensive end-of-life healthcare for the Isle of Wight community, which worked with roughly 1,800 patients in 2011 and 2012.

For those interested in learning more about walking on the island, a festival between May 4th and 19th will offer a selection of talks on the subject as well as presenting new walks for dedicated ramblers.ADNFCR-3083-ID-801517465-ADNFCR
