Registration open for Isle of Wight Cycling Festival

Individuals looking to go on Isle of Wight holidays this year may wish to coincide their trip with a bike riding event taking place on the island.

The Isle of Wight Cycling Festival will take place between September 15th and 23rd and registration for two parts of its programme are now open, Island Pulse reports.

Those eager to take part in the Hills Killer and Cycle the Wight challenges now have the opportunity to pick up a festival programme from a range of venues, including County Hall, leisure centres and libraries.

Included in the pamphlets is information about the numerous rides taking place, such as ride grading, pace and distance details.

Councillor George Brown, Isle of Wight Council cabinet member for the economy and the environment, noted: "The Isle of Wight was named as one of the world's best cycling routes by leading travel guide Lonely Planet in 2009 and the cycling festival is a great way for visitors - and residents - to find out why."

Participants in the Hills Killer race will need to ride over one of three distances - either three hills at 13 miles, seven at 26 miles or 14 climbs at 52 miles.

The contest is timed against the clock and will see those competing in the seven hills challenge starting at Ninham Farm Shanklin, while the 14 hills racers are to get underway at the Apple Farm in Freshwater.

Cycle the Wight is an endurance test that covers the full 70-mile circular road route of the Isle of Wight and is raced in aid of the British Heart Foundation.

Cllr Brown added: "This year's festival has more rides to choose from than ever before, reflecting the increased popularity of cycling."

Following on from the cycling will be the Annual West Wight Triathlon - featuring a swim, road cycle and run - which is in its ninth year and will take place on September 25th.
