October 'is good to spot squirrels on Isle of Wight holiday'

Wildlife lovers have been told to book Isle of Wight holidays for October if they want to catch a rare glimpse of a red squirrel.

According to the Isle of Wight Council, the month is always a good time to spot the animals because it is when they come out from their hiding places in trees the most.

It was explained that this is because they are storing up food such as nuts for the cold winter months, when they find a place to hibernate for months on end.

Tourists were pointed towards a walk organised by the island's Wight Squirrel Project taking place on October 9th, which gives visitors the chance to learn more about the animals.

"The walk is from Brading Railway Station to Centurion's Copse, a red squirrel stronghold. You may even spot one doing a death-defying leap from tree to tree," commented the council.

Red squirrels are more common on the Isle of Wight because the Solent acts as a barrier to grey squirrels, according to the Wight Squirrel Project.
