New skateboard event for the Isle of Wight?

People heading off on an Isle of Wight holiday may soon be able to watch or take part in a proposed new skateboard event.

Members of the Isle of Wight Youth Council have leant their backing to plans to make such a gathering an annual showcase, the Isle of Wight County Press reports.

The get-together would take place across the island, meaning holidaymakers could take in the festivities regardless of where they are staying.

Bob Nelson, environment officer at the Isle of Wight Council, has come up with the idea and believes it has the potential to be a great success.

He explained skateboarders, roller-skaters and BMX riders would all be included in the games, which will be held at each of the island's eight skate parks.

The competitions will be free to enter and are likely to get underway in August 2012.

Mr Nelson explained prizes will be on offer for the winners, noting a similar event held at Freshwater skate park - which was revamped in September 2010 and saw participants from the island and the mainland joining in the fun - was very well received.

The council representative noted: "It will take a lot of planning but having the support of the youngsters is a huge step in the right direction."

"There will be several factors to take into consideration, including cost, which could be about £5,000 and arranging transport for the competitors," he added.

An anti-litter campaign could also form part of the proceedings, Mr Nelson suggested, as the skate parks seem to be blighted by high levels of rubbish and discarded items.

Sam Hughes, a member of the youth council, said it would be great to get some expert judges involved in the contests, adding he knows a few people who would definitely be interested in taking part.
