New artwork selected for Isle of Wight

Isle of Wight residents have voted for the design of a new piece of art that is set to be installed on the island as a celebration of the life of John Milne.

In order to mark the famous former Isle of Wight resident, the chosen design is to be placed on to three enamel panels and erected on the corner wall at Little London car park in Newport.

The winning design was named as Southsea-based artist Kevin Dean's idea and he will now put together a project team to make his proposal a reality.

According to the Isle of Wight Council, he will then start to work with Isle of Wight firm AJ Wells to produce the design on the enamel panels and the finished artwork is expected to be fitted at some point in the autumn.

"World-renowned seismologist Milne lived in Shide from 1895 until his death in 1913 and is widely credited as revolutionising the study of earthquakes by inventing a new type of seismograph - called the horizontal pendulum seismograph - while he worked in Japan," it was noted by the local authority.

Isle of Wight residents were given the chance to vote for their favourite design for the artwork from a shortlist on the council's website and also at the Quay Arts Centre.

It was previously announced by the local authority that the winning artist from a shortlist of three ideas would receive a commissioning fee of £2,500 from the local authority.

The deadline for artists to submit their suggestions to the Isle of Wight Council was in May and since then locals and those on Isle of Wight holidays have been voting for their favourite.

An unveiling of the piece of finished artwork on the corner wall at Little London car park in Newport is sure to be a well attended event later in the year.
