Memorial ploughing match

Memorial ploughing match

Few activities embody the spirit of the countryside quite as much as ploughing. The yearly activity of renewing the fields for the new crop has become a symbol of rebirth - a representation of the endless cycle of life.

It's no wonder it has been remarked upon so often by pastoral poets including John Clare, who actually dragged the heavy mechanism over the cracked earth of his native Northamptonshire.

In an effort to revive the magic of the countryside and take us back to a time when such activities would have been done by man or beast, New Wolverton Farm in Shorwell near Newport is holding a memorial ploughing match, celebrating all methods of renewing our fields.

Watch vintage and conventional tractors racing alongside elegant horses, their coats shining in the spring sun and their tails swishing at the flies, at this very special event.

Entry is free and it's likely to thrill the children as well as the adults, so there's no reason not to take along the entire family to this jaw-droppingly beautiful slice of the Isle of Wight and experience the countryside as it once was.

Refreshments will be made available and the money collected from these will be donated to the Earl Mountbatten Hospice.

Turn up at 9:30am sharp for an entire day of countryside activities, with the plough racing going on until 4:30pm.

The Isle of Wight has a long agricultural history, with its patchwork emerald fields of various shades providing the food of uncountable generations in the island's fascinating past.

Other examples of great sites on the isle include Bembridge Windmill, which still retains much of its functioning machinery despite being out of use for decades.
