Memorial Ploughing Match to return this year

The sixth annual Memorial Ploughing Match could be an attraction for visitors to the Isle of Wight over the coming months.

Taking place on April 7th at Atherfield Farm from 09:30 to 16:30 GMT, the event is to be a showcase of agricultural prowess and historical farming equipment, with the Isle of Wight Traction Engine Club holding the annual showpiece in memory of its former members.

Organiser Karen Sheath stated: "The ploughing match idea was originally thought up to remember [Stephen Hayles], who was himself a keen ploughman.

"The passing away of three further ploughmen changed our ideas slightly and we decided to have one match to remember them all. Everyone has supported the idea as a great way of remembering some very much loved people."

She added that the idea of raising money for the Earl Mountbatten Hospice was put forward at the same time, with the notion highly appreciated as many members and visitors alike have known somebody whose lives have been touched by the care shown at the Hospice.

Open to the public, the event was first held in 2009 and it has become an annual fixture ever since.

It pits members of the club against one another in a bid to see whose traction engine which individual can undertake the best ploughing.

Held last year at New Wolverton Farm, the attraction raised £5,500 for Earl Mountbatten Hospice and was an extremely popular day out for all the family.

Winners of the many disciplines of the Memorial Ploughing Match were Gary Rutter, Will Humby, Derek Turner, Stuart Slocombe, Bob Toms, John Stallard, Shane Parry and Glenn Snudden, with many of last year's victoirs returning to attempt to defend their crown in 2013.

Entry is on a donation basis for visitors, with a minimum cost of £5 per group.

Needless to say, this year's match promises to be as feisty as those in the past and it will be a great day out for all the family, while also providing welcome support to a worthy charity.ADNFCR-3083-ID-801544667-ADNFCR
