Isle of Wight to invest in superfast broadband

Tourists on Isle of Wight holidays may soon be able to benefit from superfast broadband during their break on the island, after its local authority announced it is to invest in boosting internet speeds.

The Isle of Wight Council's Cabinet has revealed proposals to spend £3 million on boosting the island's infrastructure so those who live, work and take vacations on the island can use the internet at superfast speeds.

BT has already announced a commitment to improve broadband connections in areas such as Newport and Ryde on the Isle of Wight in the next few years.

Although the Isle of Wight Council pointed out this was to be welcomed, it also noted those in the countryside would then be left behind people living in the island's more metropolitan locations.

The deputy leader of the Isle of Wight Council George Brown, who is also the cabinet member responsible for the economy, said: "BT's massive investment is very good news but would not provide the total solution as it would not bring super-fast broadband to some of the island's significant towns nor its rural areas."

He added the proposals by the local authority would result in the possibility of a two-speed island internet connection being avoided.

Mr Brown conceded the Isle of Wight Council has been forced to make some difficult decisions in order to concentrate on the areas it deems to be a priority, with the economy one of these.

Kevin Smith, chief executive officer of the Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce, said the proposal is superb news for businesses on the island.

Later this week (December 21st), the Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce is to host a special Christmas event at the Isle of Wight Steam Railway at Havenstreet.

Members are invited to take their kids along to meet Santa and take a trip on the steam train.
