Isle of Wight to benefit from improved cycle access

Cyclists could be set to book Isle of Wight holidays to try out a new pass on the island, with access to be improved as a result.

Tim Thorne, chairman of the Cyclewight group, stated he is "delighted" with the news the project is now entering its final stage.

He said: "The island rightly markets itself as a cycle-friendly destination and this route clearly demonstrates the council is serious about promoting cycle travel for residents as well as visitors."

The designated link between Blackhouse Quay and Shide is going to provide the final piece in the route between Cowes and Sandown, as well as part of the wider National Cycle Route 23 between Reading and Sandown.

Work is set to be completed by Christmas, so those who are on Isle of Wight holidays for the festive period may be tempted to head out and try the new route.

The resurfacing of Connie's Way between Furrlongs and Shide includes a widening of the pass so pedestrians and cyclists are both able to use it.

A new crossing is also being installed at the bottom of Newport High Street in order to avoid the flow of vehicles being affected by the completion of the route.

Councillor Edward Giles, cabinet member for highways, transport and waste at the Isle of Wight Council, said the work is going to make cycling through the island much easier.

"I apologise in advance for any inconvenience that these works may cause in the coming days, but this project will provide the island with much improved cycle access," he added.

Cyclists head out on Isle of Wight holidays every year in order to attend a popular annual event that is hosted on the island.

Next year, the Isle of Wight Cycling Festival will be held between September 22nd and 30th.
