Isle of Wight pier 'to get new lease of life'

The Isle of Wight is set to benefit from the opening of a new cafe that is said to be part of plans to bring new life to a pier on the island.

Piers are one of the Isle of Wight's major tourist attractions and they are a popular destination for individuals heading to the island over the course of the summer months.

Thousands of people take Isle of Wight holidays and the new cafe, which is set to be located at the end of Totland Pier, should be open by next summer.

According to a report by the Isle of Wight County Press, work at the end of the pier is set to start in November with the demolition of the cafe that stands there at the moment.

Plans to open a two-storey cafe and holiday accommodation on Totland Pier were originally revealed two years ago, but planning delays have put back the start date of the scheme.

Linda Welch, director of Halogen UK, which represents the developers, Farnham Developments Ltd, said: "We are pleased to be moving forward with this exciting and important project. We look forward to giving the historic pier the new lease of life it deserves."

Work is already underway readying the pier for the building that is set to occur over the course of the next 12 months, including the piling of the pier and the manufacturing of steel lattice beams.

Concerns over flooding were raised at the time of the initial plans for the two-storey cafe and the holiday accommodation, but this has now been answered by the developers of the site.

Many cafes are available for those on Isle of Wight holidays to try during their time on the island, including one at the Isle of Wight Garlic Farm, which is a popular destination for those on breaks.
