Isle of Wight park 'not being sold off'

The Isle of Wight Council is not selling off a park that is popular with residents and tourists alike, it has confirmed.

Puckpool Park was said to be the subject of a major bid from developers who wanted to turn the area into up to 200 houses.

ZeroC recently bought an option to develop the neighbouring derelict Harcourt Sands holiday centre, but the Isle of Wight Council has denied it is planning to sell the park to the firm.

A campaign website was set up in order to try to save the park from being sold off and turned into housing, reports the Isle of Wight County Press.

Isle of Wight Council deputy director for economy and the environment John Metcalfe said: "There is no truth whatsoever in rumours that the council is looking at selling off parts of Puckpool Park as part of the proposed development of Harcourt Sands."

He explained how the rumour may have started over discussions the local authority previously held with a company that inquired about making improvements to Puckpool Park.

Another developer was expected to come in with an offer to build a hotel for those on Isle of Wight holidays at the site of the park.

Mr Metcalfe noted parts of the park are protected by English Heritage as a Scheduled Ancient Monument and that Puckpool Park will always be open to members of the public.

"Since then we have not had any further discussions with the developers," he was quoted as saying by the news provider.

Puckpool Park is one of the most popular tourist hotspots on the Isle of Wight and it hosts a historic monument, as well as offering fantastic sea views and sandy beaches.

The site also has a children's play park and sports facilities including tennis courts, mini golf, petanque, putting and beautiful gardens.
