Isle of Wight 'one of world's top five prehistoric sites'

The Isle of Wight is one of the top five prehistoric sites in the world, according to the local council.

George Brown, Isle of Wight Council cabinet member responsible for tourism, explained that a newly-released report about dinosaur fossils on the island will help to boost its reputation as a holiday destination further.

"We are already known as one of the top five most important sites for prehistoric finds in the world and this report strengthens that even more," he said.

He was commenting after University of Portsmouth palaeontologist Dr Steve Sweetman and Dr Allan Insole from the University of Bristol stated that the island is ideal for dinosaur hunters because of its weather and a fire followed by a flood 130 million years ago.

Steve Hutt, curator at the Isle of Wight-based Dinosaur Isle, added that there are two sites on the island that are perfect for hunting dinosaur fossils - the south-west coast near Brook and the east coast at Yaverland.
