Isle of Wight man breaks sword-swallowing record

The new world record holder for swallowing curved swords, Ian Brown, has claimed working with the Circus of Horrors performance group at Southsea helped him pick up the skill.

Mr Brown, 29, helps run his own organisation on the Isle of Wight, the Ryde Extreme Performers.

He told the Isle of Wight County Press that the Circle of Horrors group taught him how to perform the trick by swallowing a straightened-out wire coat hanger, which he then practiced up to 40 times day.

"It was September last year when I first managed a sword," explained the performer, who held the two weapons in his throat for 13 seconds to beat the world record.

Haze, creator and ringmaster of the Circle of Horrors group, admitted that the record-breaker has an impressive aptitude for the illusion.

"He had amazing control of his gag reflex. He'd learnt to swallow curved swords, with a 45-degree angle, two of them at the same time, and hold them inside him," he said.

The record was set during the Circus of Horrors' performance at Ferneham Hall, Fareham, after the editor of the Guinness World Records came to see the organisation perform.

"You notice curved swords more than straight ones because they press in places, which isn't very nice. Straight ones I don't notice unless they’re cold, though you can feel your heart beat against the swords," the daredevil told the newspaper.

While it is unknown whether or not Mr Brown intends to try anything more daring than this, it is possible that visitors to the Isle of Wight will see the Ryde Extreme Performers play one of their regular shows around the area's venues.

First launched in 2000, the organisation helps train local people in circus skills and other tricks, taking part in carnivals and parades across the island.ADNFCR-3083-ID-801505540-ADNFCR
