Isle of Wight holidaymakers can view historic artefacts

Tourists taking Isle of Wight holidays now have the opportunity to look at artefacts from the island's past during their stay on the island.

Isle of Wight Council's heritage service has won £2,000 of funding to place displays from the Museum of Island History, which is located in Newport, in local libraries around the island.

Ventnor, Ryde and Newport libraries are now displaying the historical artefacts.

The Isle of Wight Council said: "The scheme to show historical island items in libraries aims to give more people some new and different opportunities to learn about Isle of Wight history."

It added that the displays will change three times a year at least, so people who take Isle of Wight holidays regularly may see different items on each trip.

Tourists on Isle of Wight holidays who visit the library in Ryde will be able to look at a tin opener invented by an island resident in 1880.

During their time in Ryde, visitors can also play pitch-and-putt golf at Appley Park or visit Victorian landmark Appley Tower.
