Isle of Wight holiday could include ancient art of hedgelaying

Tourists taking Isle of Wight holidays at the end of next month could attend an event being held on the island dedicated to the ancient art of hedgelaying.

On February 26th 2011, Calbourne Mill near Newport will be hosting the island's annual hedgelaying competition, organised by the Isle of Wight Hedgerow Group, Landscape Therapy, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust and the local council.

Matthew Chatfield, Isle of Wight Council's parks and countryside manager, will present prizes to the winners on the day and stated that while hedgerows may appear to be a natural feature of the countryside, they are laid by people.

"It is vital that this traditional method of hedge management, involving the partial cutting of stems and laying them at an angle, continues. It has great conservation and wildlife value," he said.

Calbourne Mill can be found by those on Isle of Wight holidays by travelling along the B3399 Newport to Freshwater road, while it is also located half a mile west of Calbourne Village.
