Isle of Wight 'has thriving red squirrel population'

Wildlife lovers could be tempted to book Isle of Wight holidays after being informed that the island has a thriving population of rare red squirrels.

All over the mainland, red squirrels have been killed off by their grey cousins, but the Isle of Wight has proved to be a fertile hunting ground for the animals, reports Country Life.

It noted that a new scheme being started in Cornwall is hoping to increase the numbers of red squirrels living in the wild in the UK, but for now the Isle of Wight is one of the only places in the country they can live in peace.

"A similar project on the island of Anglesey, where reds have increased tenfold over 12 years, has been successful," noted the news provider.

Wight Squirrel Project reports that the animals are capable of living for as long as six years in the wild.

It encourages those on Isle of Wight holidays who enjoy spotting the animals to make a donation to the organisation to help them protect the population.
