Isle of Wight 'has rich source of dinosaur remains'

People who are interested in the history of dinosaurs may be tempted to book an Isle of Wight holiday.

This is because University of Portsmouth palaeontologist Dr Steve Sweetman and Dr Allan Insole from the University of Bristol have unveiled a new study which shows that the island's previously violent weather means it is an ideal area for dinosaur hunters.

"Apart from the sheer diversity of dinosaurs found on the island we also have the remains of the animals and plants that lived with them," Dr Sweetman said.

He added that around 130 million years ago, a fire was followed by a flood that helped to preserve the island's dinosaur population for millennia to come.

Dr Sweetman explained that the Isle of Wight used to enjoy a much warmer climate as it was located where the Rock of Gibraltar is now - it has moved northwards over the centuries.

People on Isle of Wight holidays who are interested in the history of the island can head to Dinosaur Farm, which was established almost 20 years ago.
